Ballito at a glance
Ballito is situated approximately 40kms north of Durban and forms part of the KwaDukuza local Municipality, and iLembe District Municipality. As dolphins are common on this stretch of the North Coast Shoreline this area has been termed The Dolphin Coast. It had its origins as a holiday town in the 1950’s, but it has undergone exponential growth in recent times. It now has 3 major Shopping malls, namely The Lifestyle Centre, The Junction and The Ballito Bay Mall , has undergone major road upgrades to cope with the growing population and in not surprisingly there has also been an increase in schools. These include Umhlali Pre Primary and the independent schools Crawford College North Coast, Ashton College, Trinityhouse Palm Lakes and Curro Mount Richmore. Ballito is still a popular holiday destination with many hotels and self-catering accommodation, swimming and surfing beaches and a promenade of about 2.5 kilometres long along the beach front that is popular for walking and jogging. Ballito's business sector has also grown significantly with a large commercial business park bordering the N2 Freeway With a full service industry within the commercial business park, Ballito now caters to a growing business community on the North Coast. Enterprise iLembe, the regions investment arm, has been formed to develop Ballito and the iLembe area as an investment destination of choice. The development of the King Shaka International Airport and Dube City to the South have also contributed significantly to the growth of Ballito.
